Here are some upcoming classes still open for registration this coming week. These are always fun and unique hands-on fun sessions.

Choose from Artisan Sourdough Bread Crafting, Traditional Bread Baking and Butter Churning, and Kids Cooking Dinner…or choose all of them! Make it a stay-cation here at Amanda’s Bequest Bed & Breakfast.

Our on-site cooking school Bygone Basics (http://bygonebasics.com) is a fun place to experience history and learn interesting artisan heirloom food creations.

Here is what is coming up:

Sourdough Start(er) to Finish – July 6, 2014 from 1 to 4 pm EST

In this all-in-one session (normally split into two sessions). Enjoy food and friendship while learning how to start your own sourdough “mother”. This starter can be used to make bread with or (if you are a purist) without commercial yeast. At Bygone Basics our sourdough bread contains ZERO commercial yeast. You can do this easily at home also. In this session, learn the art of artisan sourdough baking from the starter to taking your warm delicious bread out of the oven. You’ll assemble the sourdough mother. Learn how to finish it in just a few minutes a day. It takes about a week of daily attention.

Now that you have a good sourdough starter, learn Valerie’s technique for making bread easily and without commercial yeast. You’ll be using Valerie’s starter. You can repeat this at home and be a hero to your friends and guests. Best part? You can keep the dough “at the ready” for baking when you want. Enjoy appetizers and beverage while learning this old-fashioned artisan skill.

Enjoy sourdough bread and good times, great artisan learning. Bring a mason jar or other similar sized container to bring your starter home and a 4 to 6 quart food safe container for the dough you will be bringing home. Students will also bring home a small loaf of baked bread! You will be on a bread “roll”!

$45 per person plus $10 materials cost.

Traditional Bread Baking/Butter Churning Combo – July 8, 2014 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm EST

You don’t need a bread machine! Bread baking is soul therapy. Make a beautifully soft white bread in the traditional ways. Be surprised that it is almost the same amount of on-hand time as bread machine baking, just minutes extra … and oh so much more satisfying. While the bread is rising, CHURN BUTTER! Awesome. Bring home your own loaf and some fresh churned butter to serve with it. You may be mistaken for June Cleaver. ;) The butter churning process is quite simple but does really have more steps than the unfinished butter your kids made by shaking the cartons, there actually is more to it and some great science. Only $35 per person for a fun time, munchies, and friends.

Kids Cooking Challenge 7/8/14 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm

This session is designed for young people, aged 10 to 18. This session is about learning to cook while having fun and feeling comfortable in the kitchen… creating a good meal from random ingredients, the way it was done in days long gone. There was no quick trip to the grocery store for ingredients for that one recipe, meals were prepared based on what was available.

Participants will be working together to make various dishes for the meal, and along the way, learning key kitchen skills, like knives, measuring properly and how to select salty, crunchy, sweet, acidic…etc. to enhance flavors.

Everyone sits down to dine together on their unique and flavorful meal and voting anonymously on the best dish.

Parents can join the ending dinner for additional $15 per parent. Enjoy food, fun, and new friends. A minimum of 4 participants needed to run this session and it only costs $45! Think of that…your child is getting some great kitchen skills, and interesting and memorable experience, a full hearty and delicious meal.

Preregistration necessary, there is a lot or prep for this session! Call or email asap to register.

Limited to first 8 Registrants.
